Vocabulary: Mind (1)

Vocabulary: nouns
Intermediate to advanced level English (B1-C2)

‘Mind’ as a noun is in a lot of expressions.

Here are 2 examples:

He has an open mind (will consider new or different ideas and opinions)
Travel broadens the mind (an idiom suggesting that travelling is positive – ‘broad’ means ‘wide’)

Here are some others:

The doctor put my mind at ease (the doctor helped stop me worrying about something)
I have a good mind to speak to your teacher tomorrow (a parent is seriously considering seeing the teacher because something has happened that has made them angry or annoyed)
It crossed my mind to let you know (you briefly considered doing something)
To my mind Liverpool are the best team to support (in my opinion)

And finally here’s a rather advanced phrase:

She never stops to say ‘hello’. Mind you she has a large family and must be very busy.
(Gives you more information that should be considered. It is often used to soften or explain a comment)

When you are learning new words, it is a good idea to think about common phrases and expressions (including phrasal verbs) that include the word. When you revise a word, try to remember expressions too.
