Vocabulary: Informal phrases for a terrible start to the day

Advanced level (C1/C2)

Useful informal phrases are in bold. I hope your morning was better than this one:

I was late getting up and knew I had to get a move on, otherwise I would be late for the meeting. I wanted to have a quick shower but the bathroom was occupied. I decided to wait until it was free. Eventually I got washed and dressed and grabbed a coffee. I jumped in the car and turned on the radio and after 10 minutes I heard a traffic report saying there was a 5-mile traffic jam on the road I needed to take. I really didn’t like the sound of that. I was stuck in traffic for at least an hour and arrived at work far too late for the meeting. I could have kicked myself! I really should have set my alarm clock. Everyone in the office realised what had happened and made jokes about it all day long. They really rubbed it in and never let me forget it.

Learning vocabulary in a context is usually the best way.
